EC3 Tool
Building Transparency’s free, open-access tool and EPD database for comparing embodied carbon during material specification, procurement and project accounting.
Open the EC3 Tool ↗The short story
More than
a name.
EC3 launched publicly in 2019 and is managed by Building Transparency. The organisation’s 2026 methods account explains how differing EPD structures require ingestion, validation and alignment before meaningful comparison.
Why it is here
A useful starting point,
not a verdict.
It brings third-party Environmental Product Declaration data into material decisions while retaining the need to align units, modules, categories and project context.
This listing is informational. It is not an endorsement, certification, ranking or guarantee. Independently confirm identity, credentials, licences, safety information, price, availability, terms and current operating status before acting.

Publicly launched in 2019
Building Transparency records that EC3 launched publicly in 2019 through the Carbon Leadership Forum and more than fifty partners. Building Transparency was formed in 2020 to manage and scale it.
A free tool joining quantities with third-party EPD data
EC3 supports material comparison and potential or realised project embodied-carbon accounting. Its February 2026 data account explains how EPD formats and indicator definitions can differ.
EC3 2.0 is inviting feedback on data operations
Building Transparency’s 2026 publication explicitly invites feedback on improvements for EC3 2.0. The documented direction is better ingestion and alignment, not a claim that all EPDs are already interchangeable.
Compare within a disciplined boundary
Align product category, function, unit, life-cycle modules, geography and dates; retain the original EPD and include durability and project performance.
