From appearance to an identified object
GIA’s published pearl service separates identification from classification. Its Identification Report records characteristics including quantity, weight, size, shape, colour, origin, mollusk, environment and detectable treatments; classification adds quality observations for applicable nacreous pearls.

The current service lists Pearl Identification, Pearl Identification & Classification and Cultured Pearl Classification reports for loose, mounted or strung pearls. GIA also publishes sample reports, fees, laboratory locations and report-related tools.
