Did the fourth global coral bleaching event end? What NOAA says now
NOAA Coral Reef Watch says the fourth global mass coral bleaching event likely ended in 2025. That does not mean reefs are now free from local heat stress or bleaching risk.
‘Likely ended’ is NOAA’s current global status
NOAA and the International Coral Reef Initiative confirmed the fourth global bleaching event in April 2024. NOAA’s current Coral Reef Watch update, dated 2 June 2026, says the global event likely ended in 2025.
The tracked period from 1 January 2023 through 30 September 2025 exposed about 84.4 per cent of global coral reef area to bleaching-level heat stress, with mass bleaching documented in at least 83 countries and territories.
Ending the global event does not end local bleaching
A global-event designation describes widespread synchronized heat stress; it is not an all-clear for every reef. A reef can still experience marine heatwaves, bleaching or disease after the global event threshold is no longer being met.
