Do synthetic clothes shed microplastics? What the evidence actually says

Synthetic textiles can release microfibres during manufacturing, wear, washing and disposal. The evidence is real, but the size of the problem and best interventions still carry uncertainty.

The fibre can leave the garment at several stages

Synthetic fibres are plastics. Friction and mechanical stress can release tiny fibres during production, ordinary wear, washing and disposal. Research has focused heavily on laundry because wastewater creates a measurable pathway to rivers and seas.

The EEA notes that the first washes can release relatively high amounts, while ageing and wear can also increase shedding later in a garment’s life.

Why the numbers are usually ranges

The EEA cites estimates that synthetic textiles contribute roughly 16–35 per cent of global marine microplastic releases, with 200,000–500,000 tonnes of textile microplastics entering the global marine environment each year. Those figures depend on methods, geography, wastewater systems and definitions.

A newer EEA indicator for the European Union also reports a wide uncertainty range. That is a reminder not to turn one estimate into a universal number for every garment or household.

What this does—and does not—say about a wardrobe

The evidence does not support throwing away serviceable synthetic clothes as an automatic environmental win. Replacement itself uses materials and energy, and disposal can create another pathway.

A more useful approach is to keep garments in use, wash only when needed, follow care instructions and favour durable construction when buying something new. The next article in this pair looks at practical laundering choices.
