How to read an EU seafood label

EU consumer information for fishery and aquaculture products can include the commercial and scientific species name, production method and catch or farming area. Each field answers a different sourcing question.

01

Start with both names of the species

EU rules require the commercial designation used in the market and the scientific name. Member States maintain authoritative lists of accepted commercial designations.

The scientific name helps reduce ambiguity when one market name can refer to different species.

02

Then read how and where it was produced

Consumer information distinguishes production method—for example caught, caught in freshwater or farmed—and provides catch-area or production-area information according to product type.

Those fields make a sourcing story more specific, but they do not by themselves certify environmental or social performance.

03

Why the national list still matters

The European Commission provides an information system, but states that national lists are the authoritative source for commercial designations accepted in each Member State.

For a disputed or unfamiliar market name, check the relevant country’s current list rather than relying only on a generic seafood dictionary.

Before you decide

Keep these five things with you.

  1. 01Read the commercial name
  2. 02Read the scientific name
  3. 03Check caught, freshwater-caught or farmed
  4. 04Check catch or production area
  5. 05Separate sourcing data from sustainability claims

Useful questions

Quick answers,
kept specific.

Why does an EU seafood label show a scientific name?

It helps identify the biological species consistently when commercial names can vary by language or market.

Does an EU seafood label prove sustainability?

No. Species, production method and area are sourcing information; sustainability requires separate evidence.
