Why seagrass matters to fisheries, storms and blue carbon

Seagrass is a flowering marine plant, not seaweed. UNEP says meadows occur in 159 countries, support fisheries, protect coasts and store substantial oceanic carbon.

Seagrass is not seaweed

Seagrasses are flowering plants adapted to life underwater. Their roots and rhizomes anchor into sediment, allowing them to form meadows in shallow coastal waters from tropical regions to the Arctic Circle.

UNEP’s current overview places seagrass in 159 countries across six continents and estimates more than 300,000 square kilometres of known meadow area.

One meadow can connect food, shoreline and climate functions

UNEP says seagrass meadows provide nursery habitat to more than one fifth of the world’s largest 25 fisheries. Dense vegetation also slows water movement and helps reduce wave energy, contributing to coastal protection.

Although seagrass covers only a small fraction of the ocean floor, carbon can accumulate in its biomass and especially in underlying sediments. That is why seagrass is grouped with mangroves and salt marshes in blue-carbon discussions.

Why protection often matters before restoration

Anchoring, trampling, dredging, coastal development, polluted runoff and climate stress can all damage meadows. Restoration can help in appropriate places, but a planted meadow cannot simply replace every ecological function of an established one overnight.

For travellers and coastal businesses, preventing avoidable physical damage is a practical first step.
