The fish market moved; the food district remained
Tsukiji’s official history says the fish market relocated from Nihonbashi after the 1923 Great Kantō Earthquake and began operating in Tsukiji in 1935. The Tokyo Central Wholesale Market later moved away, while the surrounding shops remained as the Tsukiji Outer Market.
Wholesale, retail and eating share the same streets
The official market association describes Tsukiji as Japan’s “Food Town”, with wholesale and retail shops alongside restaurants. Its directory covers fresh seafood, processed fish, produce, meat, eggs, utensils and multiple places to eat.
Go for the market, then verify the exact shop
Use the official store list, map and calendar to plan a visit. Individual opening times, availability and prices can vary, so confirm the specific shop or restaurant before relying on a general market schedule.
